But any outcome will have a great impact on Georgia and its occupied territories. The questions for Georgian (and international) policy towards Abkhazia and South Ossetia are many and answers so far few:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-fe9cc265 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does Georgia still have a coherent policy vis-\u00e0-vis the occupied regions now?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the event of a crisis-imposed relative Russian disengagement from the Caucasus, how should Georgia react &#8211; not only regarding its own occupied regions but also in the North Caucasus?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can \u2018status-neutral\u2019 forms of engagement offer an alternative to full Russian domination?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does Georgia deal with the reality that even without Russian occupation, decades of segregation and tension have meant that there is little appetite amongst ethnic-Abkhaz or Ossetians for any kind of shared future?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a political reality where the poles of Abkhaz and Ossetian politics are \u2018pro-independence\u2019 and \u2018pro-Russian integration\u2019, is there utility for Georgia in encouraging the former over the latter?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And could Georgia \u2013 ironically \u2013 be these regions\u2019 best hope for genuine self-determination?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Democratic Security Institute (DSI) is an independent, non-partisan thinktank based in Tbilisi, Georgia.
